An introduction toThe Dordogne Organisation of Gentlemen

 

The Dordogne Organisation of Gentlemen (DOG) was founded in 1987 as an Anglophone member’s association, comprising many nationalities living or with holiday homes in and around the Dordogne area.​

 

We meet in a convivial, social atmosphere for regular lunches during which our members relax, converse, and try, though nearly always fail, to put the world to rights! With our collective range and depth of accumulated abilities we help and support each other as needed.​

 

We meet for lunch at least once a month at a variety of excellent restaurants throughout our region. At each lunch a member will normally give a talk on a subject of his choice, or a quiz or similar is held. Each regular lunch is attended by around 25-40 members and their guests.At three lunches a year, normally held in May, September and at Christmas, we have the pleasure of being joined by our wives and partners.​

I am very pleased to say that DOG is in a healthy and vibrant state, with an active, interesting, and committed membership.

The management of our organisation is run by an elected Board which oversees the key requirements of finance and administration, restaurant selection and liaison, member welfare and regular communication with our membership and other associations with which we are affiliated. Membership of DOG is by invitation from an existing member or by contacting the Secretary (dogsecretary1@gmail.com). Guests are invited to join us at one or two of our regular lunches to experience DOG for themselves. Our conversion-rate from guest to member is impressively high, which speaks to the fun and pleasure of our events and activities.

Some words of wisdom from our President.

I have recently re-read a book on France written by two Canadian authors: Julie Barlow and Jean-Benoit Nadeau called “Sixty Million Frenchmen Can’t Be Wrong”. A wonderful read into French life - its wonders and its warts. One of the questions they pose upfront is the quandary that whilst the French are some of the heaviest smokers in the world; they are the biggest consumers of wine per head, and; their diet includes heaps of fat and oil - yet they have one of the longest life-expectancies in the world!

 

The authors conclude after intense analysis that the French diet is actually very good, not a lot of food consumed is heavily processed and the fat is mostly duck (goose) fat which is actually one of the very healthiest fats. Further, their large consumption of garlic, fresh fruit and vegetables acts to sustain health. Consumption of wine is high although most French having been bought up appreciating wine drink responsibility. Finally they conclude that the French lifestyle (particularly in country areas) is relaxed and in harmony with their surroundings and community. A good health system and family support through life adds the final tick to long and happy existence.

As residents of the Dordogne region we are indeed lucky to enjoy everything that France has got to offer. I trust none of us will ever take this opportunity in life for granted.
